National Parks - Benefits to Human Beings Of late, natural resources have come under threat from expansive civilization in most parts of the world. Scientifically, natural resources are plants and animals also termed as flora and fauna. This threat to natural resources has made many countries to set up areas of conservation for plants and animals. The general terminologies used to describe these areas are national parks and game reserves. In most countries, national parks are usually under the control of national and county governments. National parks are very important to a country especially in relation to the economy of the country in question. Rare plant species and wildlife form the most important living things in most national parks and they are different from one park to the other or from one country to another. The chance to see rare plant and animal species makes many tourists visit specific countries in the world. Tourism is a major foreign exchange earner to most countries that have tourist attraction sites. Income from tourism leads to an increased growth of a country's Gross Domestic Product (G.D.P). There are many different attractions in national parks. A good example is the presence of rare animal species in national parks found in African countries. It is common to find leopards, lions and buffaloes in national parks within African states. It is however possible to find animal species in other continents which are an absent phenomenon in Africa. A good example is the availability of Kangaroos in Australian national parks and the great bison in United States of America. The use of national parks for recreation is quite a new phenomenon though it is gaining traction the world over. Camping and hiking form part of some of the recreational attractions present in modern day national parks. In other countries, national parks are also used as arenas for holding of long distance races like marathons. How do national parks form sites for recreation? This is an important point since any activities happening in national parks must not create any human-wildlife conflicts. First of all, it is good to understand that recreational activities cannot happen in any national parks. Only those national parks that allow for recreation without human-wildlife conflicts are used for such purposes. For instance the Big Bend national park in the United States of America is very ideal for hiking. The fact that the park has many natural tracks and trails allows for hiking without interfering with animal life. Leisure walks and camping also happen inside some national parks. Absence of carnivorous animals makes a park ideal for camping activities. This stems from the fact that carnivores are quite dangerous. The main way in which governments have made parks conducive for such activities is by demarcating areas for wildlife which are different from where recreational activities happen. Source: Hiking
